Landeskog sends Avs to OT win

Gabriel Landeskog didn't like his first shot choice. So he went wrap around. Landeskog scored the overtime winner, Philipp Grubauer stopped 36 shots, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Anaheim Ducks by a 3-2 score in overtime on Friday night. Mikko Rantanen also scored his first goal of the season for Colorado.

At 2:56 of the first period, Joonas Donskoi started the scoring for the Avalanche on the power play, making it 1-0 Avs. It stayed that way until 47 seconds into the second period, when Hampus Lindholm tied things up for the Ducks, making it a 1-1 game. At 6:20 of the 3rd, Rantanen scored for Colorado to make it a 2-1 lead. At 7:42, Adam Henrique quickly tied it back up to make it a 2-2 game. Landeskog then scored the game winner 1:38 into overtime.

John Gibson made 29 stops on 32 total shots for the Ducks, but that wasn't enough to save his team, as the Ducks fell to a dismal 1-2-2 on the season, good for just 7th place in the NHL's west division.

Ducks coach Dallas Eakins had some thoughts on the Ducks performance, saying that "It is so disappointing not to get both points when you play well. With a tiny bit of detail that’s a 2-0 game for us. It was going our way in overtime and then we fumbled it at the blue line. We don’t want to be a team going into overtime. We want to lock it down in regulation and get both points."

Landeskog talked about his OT winner, saying that "I definitely wasn't happy with my first shot. I got to be able to raise the puck there. You know the goalies there, especially a world-class goalie like Gibson, he's going to take away the low play so you got to raise it. But I was able to stay with it and come around the net and I saw Gibson was out of his crease a little bit. I tried to stuff it as fast as I could. Good feeling to score in OT, no doubt."

Avalanche coach Jared Bednar talked about Grubauer's confidence recently, saying that "He feels strong, confident, he looks determined. He's battling on every puck, in practices, games, he's confident, and I just think he's going to have a great year for us. He's certainly started out that way. Every game he's played for us so far, he's been fantastic and hopefully that can continue."

These two teams face off again on Sunday, with Grubauer and Gibson expected to be the goalies again.
