For Brandon Sutter, the term better late than never fit perfectly. Sutter scored his first career hat trick, Thatcher Demko stopped 35 shots, and the Vancouver Canucks routed the Ottawa Senators by a 7-1 score Monday night. Sutter, who is a 13 year veteran, finally got hat trick number one in one of the most convincing wins of the young NHL season.

Sutter started the scoring with a falling down goal in the first period to make it 1-0 Canucks. Roughly 5 minutes later, Tyler Motte added to the lead with a snap shot past Ottawa goalie Matt Murray. In the second, Austin Watson scored for Ottawa, followed by Tanner Pearson and a shorthanded goal for Sutter to make it 4-1 Canucks. In the 3rd, Quinn Hughes and Olli Juolevi scored for the Canucks before Sutter added goal number 3, making it 7-1.

Senators coach DJ Smith lamented his team's effort after the game, saying that "We got some guys that maybe are taking for granted positions in the National Hockey League. We've got to find the right combination and we've got to give some other guys opportunity to see if they want to play a little harder than some of the guys that are playing now."

Sutter spoke about his first hat trick in his 13 seasons, saying that "It only took me 13 years to get one. I was pretty pumped. You never know if you're going to get one as you get older."

Demko spoke about his performance in his first win of the season, saying that "That was something I really wanted to focus on as I kept getting in the games here is timely saves. Making sure that when they do get chances in situations like that, I can come up big and kind of give the team a chance to pull away even farther."

The two teams square off again on Wednesday, with Murray expected to start for Ottawa against Braden Holtby of Vancouver.
